Betty (Ward) Cross Penn, age 69, of 1044 Lewis Mill Lake Road, Vienna, died Friday, July 16, 2010, at her residence.

Born in Cordele, she was the daughter of the late Marvin E. Ward and Ruby Faircloth Ward and a 1958 honor graduate of Crisp County High School. In 1961, she graduated from Piedmont Nursing School as an RN. She served in the US Air Force from 1964-67, was a 1st Lieutenant with Tactical Air Command and was the first lady to fly in the F-4C. She earned her Masters Degree in Behavioral Sciences from Georgia Southwestern in 1983 and her Ph.D in Educational Administration from the University of Georgia in 1985. She was a member of Vienna United Methodist Church, started the nursing program at Middle Georgia College and taught at Mercer University School of Medicine from 1980 to 1985. She opened the first assisted living head trauma center in Eatonton.

Survivors include:
Husband: Monty Penn of Vienna

Sister: Elaine Taunton (Donny) of Vienna

Brother: Wayne Ward (Janice) of Vienna

Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Memorial services will be held at 4 PM Sunday, July 18 in Vienna United Methodist Church.

The family will greet friends after the service and may be contacted at the residence.

Memorial gifts may be made to Georgia Sheriff's Boys Ranch, PO Box 100, Hahira, Georgia 31632 or United Hospice, 708 East 16th Avenue, Cordele, Georgia 31015.
